Nissan is working on a material for its car seats that will replicate the feel of human skin.There's nothing like the feel of a luxurious car interior: smooth mahogany, buttery leather. According to engineers at Nissan's headquarters in Japan, though, there's nothing quite like the feel of human finger pads. The softness, the warmth; so they're trying to recreate both the texture and softness of the human finger.
It's a little Ed Gein, but as Jalopnik's Jason Torchinsky discovered on a visit to Nissan's Technology Seminar in Yokohama, the engineers are trying to tap in to that feeling you get when you hold hands with another human being — which is kind of sweet, when you think about it.
They even want to replicate fingerprint patterns.
Still. We hope they don't get too realistic about it, and start trying to figure out ways to include synthetic sweat glands. Ew.
